Study of combinatorial background tagging for different muon shield variants
/ Frisella, Guglielmo (University of Zurich (CH)) ; Ferro-Luzzi, Massimiliano (CERN)
/SHiP Collaboration
Suppression of combinatorial background is studied in the light of recent changes of the SHiP experimental layout, using tagging planes outside the fiducial decay volume (assumed to be a lightweight helium balloon) for three variants of the muon shield. The results of two approaches are presented, one using Monte Carlo truth information, another using the available reconstruction routines, that should allow one to define the technology and layout of the SHiP background tagging system..

Quantifying the Heat Load to Conductors Due to Strain Energy Release in CTD-101 K Magnet Impregnant
/ van Steenlandt, Jan (Twente U., Enschede) ; Kario, Anna (Twente U., Enschede) ; Otten, Simon (Twente U., Enschede) ; Warnet, Laurent (Twente U., Enschede) ; Wessel, Sander (Twente U., Enschede) ; ten Kate, Herman (Twente U., Enschede) ; van Oort, Hans (Twente U., Enschede)
State-of-the-art Nb3Sn superconducting accelerator magnets are still prone to lengthy training. This study investigates whether direct heat from fractures in commonly used magnet impregnant is sufficient to cause the instabilities during training. [...]

Study of the UHV compatibility of selected ferritic stainless steels for application in vacuum systems of future gravitational wave detectors
/ Scarcia, Carlo (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Wevers, Ivo (CERN)
Future gravitational wave detectors (GWDs), such as the Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope, demand extensive ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems, making material cost and performance critical considerations. This study explores the potential of ferritic stainless steel, specifically AISI 441 and AISI 444, as a cost-effective alternative to the commonly used austenitic stainless steel for UHV components, focusing on the analysis of outgassing rates pre- and postbakeout at 80 and 150°C for 48 h. Dielectric, thermal and mechanical properties of insulation systems for quench heaters for the protection of superconducting magnets
/ Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Osuna, Javier (CERN) ; Vielhauer, Julia (CERN) ; De Oliveira, Rui (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN)
High dielectric strength, low thermal resistance and mechanical robustness are conflicting requirements on the insulation system between the superconductors in magnet coils and the quench heaters placed on the coil for active protection in case of a quench. To investigate possibilities to further improve the performance of quench heaters for future superconducting magnets, we have characterised polyimide, PEEK and fibre reinforced PEEK films that can be used to produce large flexibly quench heater circuits. Advanced Composite Insulation Systems in Nb$_{3}$Sn Superconducting Magnets for Accelerators: Electrical Characterization of Laminates at Cryogenic Temperatures
/ Osuna, J (CERN) ; Piccin, R (CERN) ; Pincot, F O (CERN) ; Polvani, D (CERN ; Bologna U.) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN)
The electrical insulation system in wind-and-react Nb3Sn superconducting magnets must be robust, such that it can sustain the mechanical stresses, high radiation doses, and thermal cycles involved in the operation of the magnets. The chosen cable insulation material, currently a thin layer of braided S2 Glass, must also withstand a high-temperature heat treatment in an inert atmosphere, required to develop the superconducting phase in the cable. HIE ISOLDE cryogenics operation results and recent upgrades
/ Guillotin, N (CERN) ; Dupont, T (CERN) ; Barbe, T (CERN) ; Kubla, T (CERN)
The High Intensity and Energy ISOLDE (HIE-ISOLDE) enables the acceleration of medium to heavy radioactive isotopes at energies reaching 10 MeV per nucleon, a significant increase from the previous configuration limited to 2.8 MeV per nucleon. The journey towards this achievement involved a progressive deployment of radiofrequency cryomodules starting in 2015. [...]

Design of a multipurpose test facility (MTF) for HTS cables
/ Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Barth, Christian (CERN) ; Masci, Marco (CERN) ; Perini, Diego (CERN)
The High Field Magnet (HFM) program foresees, among others, the systematic measurement and assessment of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of high temperature superconductors (HTS) cables. These measurements are a key factor to characterize the conductor, verify its performance and control the production quality. [...]

Thermomechanical properties of epoxy and wax matrix composites for superconducting magnets
/ Bertsch, Jacob (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Wiker, Petter (CERN ; Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Parragh, David (CERN) ; Echtermeyer, Andreas (Norwegian U. Sci. Tech.) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN)
Thermomechanical properties of epoxy resin systems and paraffin wax for the vacuum impregnation of superconducting magnet coils have been studied at ambient and at cryogenic temperatures. Parameters for the thermomechanical modelling of isotropic pure resins and anisotropic S2 glass fibre reinforced composites, and their stress limits under uniaxial tensile, bending and shear loading have been determined..

An updated HL-LHC halo population model based on recent experimental measurements
/ Rakic, Milica (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Hermes, Pascal Dominik (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
The transverse beam halo population in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been found to carry a significant fraction of the total stored beam energy, potentially reaching several percent. With the anticipated increase in beam brightness for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), this poses an increasing risk to machine safety, particularly during abrupt orbit shifts or critical component failures. Thermomechanical properties and irradiation induced aging of SLA and FDM 3D printed high performance polymers
/ Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Parragh, David Mate (CERN) ; Vielhauer, Julia (CERN) ; Gaarud, Anders (CERN) ; Martin, Noemie (CERN) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN)
The thermomechanical properties of 3D printed polymers for potential use in superconducting devices have been compared. The FDM printed thermoplastics PEEK and ULTEM 9085 exhibit strongly anisotropic properties, with very high mechanical strength and fracture toughness in the flat and on edge printing directions, but much lower strength and toughness in the upright position.
