High fidelity numerical modelling and condition monitoring applied to septum magnets at CERN
/ Kawa, Krzysztof (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Szumlak, Tomasz (AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Kokkinos, Charilaos (Unlisted, GR) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN)
The CERN Accelerator Beam Transfer group has recently launched a study to investigate the life cycles of pulsed septum magnets. The development is aiming to enhance the prediction of anomalies, leading to reduced life cycles of these beam transfer equipment. [...]

ELISA: a compact linear accelerator for societal applications
/ Pasino, Eleonora (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Grudiev, Alexej (CERN) ; Montesinos, Eric (CERN) ; Di Lorenzo, Francesco (CERN) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Koopmans, Marten (CERN) ; Mathot, Serge (CERN)
The experience gained at CERN by the R&D; for LINAC4 has been exported to medical and societal applications. With an innovative design of the Radio Frequecy Quadrupole (RFQ) at high frequencies, it is possible to build very com- pact structures, reproducible in industry and with the po- tential of full portability. The PUMA offline ion source beamline
/ Schlaich, Moritz (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Fischer, Paul (Greifswald U.) ; Giesel, Paul Florian (Greifswald U.) ; Klink, Clara (Darmstadt, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Obertelli, Alexandre (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Schweikhard, Lutz (Greifswald U.) ; Wienholtz, Frank (Darmstadt, Tech. U.)
The antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation experiment (PUMA) at CERN aims to study the nucleonic composition in the matter density tail of stable and radioactive nuclei using low-energy antiprotons. Since there is no facility in which both low-energy antiprotons and radioactive nuclei can be produced, the experimental realization with exotic nuclei requires the transportation of the antiprotons from the Extra Low ENergy Antiproton (ELENA) facility to the nearby located Isotope mass Separator On-Line DEvice (ISOLDE). Improving the Accuracy of the LHC Superconducting Main Dipole Circuit By-Pass Diode Model Through Closed-Loop Optimization
/ Gorenflo, M (CERN ; Philipps U. Marburg) ; Charifoulline, Z (CERN) ; Chmielinska, A (CERN) ; Ravaioli, E (CERN) ; Verweij, A (CERN) ; Vitrano, A (CERN) ; Wozniak, M (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) includes eight main dipole circuits, each containing 154 superconducting magnets. We are carrying out simulations of the electromagnetic thermal behavior of these circuits, together with experimental tests and continuous monitoring, to ensure their safe operation and to further improve our understanding. This paper presents the design and optimization of a low-weight helium-free Nb-Ti CCT superconducting magnet (MAGDEM – MAGent DEMonstrator) for the R&D; phase of the ISOLDE Superconducting Recoil Separator (ISRS) at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The system can be expanded to other accelerator applications demanding compact lightweight superconducting magnets, such as medical hadron therapy systems. [...]

Study of combinatorial background tagging for different muon shield variants
/ Frisella, Guglielmo (University of Zurich (CH)) ; Ferro-Luzzi, Massimiliano (CERN)
/SHiP Collaboration
Suppression of combinatorial background is studied in the light of recent changes of the SHiP experimental layout, using tagging planes outside the fiducial decay volume (assumed to be a lightweight helium balloon) for three variants of the muon shield. The results of two approaches are presented, one using Monte Carlo truth information, another using the available reconstruction routines, that should allow one to define the technology and layout of the SHiP background tagging system..
