Experience with the alpaka performance portability library in the CMS software / ius ; ejdl
To achieve better computational efficiency and exploit a wider range of computing resources, the CMS software framework (CMSSW) has been extended to offload part of the physics reconstruction to NVIDIA GPUs. To support additional back-ends, as well to avoid the need to write, validate and maintain a separate implementation of the reconstruction algorithms for each back-end, CMS has adopted the Alpaka performance portability library. Alpaka (Abstraction Library for Parallel Kernel Acceleration) is a header-only C++ library that provides performance portability across different back-ends, abstracting the underlying levels of parallelism. Dead cone effect and charm quark mass effects in high-pT D-jets with the CMS experiment / Mijuskovic, Jelena (INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) /CMS Collaboration
The mass of heavy quarks modifies the radiation pattern of heavy-quark jets in comparison to their light quark counterparts, since the heavy quark mass effectively regularizes the soft and collinear divergences that would normally dominate the partonic cascade formation. This leads to the depletion of collinear gluon emissions relative to the heavy quark, an effect known as the dead cone effect. [...]

Probing global symmetries with top and Higgs at CMS / Chanon, Nicolas Pierre (IP2I, Lyon) /CMS Collaboration
Several global symmetries of the Standard Model Lorentz invariance, CPT and CP symmetries are tested with top quarks and Higgs bosons using LHC data collected with the CMS detector. Top-antitop ($t\bar{t}$) production is used to probe CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. [...]

Constraining the color-charge effects of energy loss with jet axis-based substructure studies in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV / Pradhan, Raghunath (Illinois U., Chicago) /CMS Collaboration
This study investigates jet axis decorrelation in inclusive jets using lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The decorrelation is defined as the angular difference between two jet axis definitions, obtained by applying different recombination schemes to the constituents of jets reconstructed with the anti-$k_{\mathrm{T}}$ sequential algorithm and a distance parameter of $R= 0.4$. [...]

Probing bottom quark mass effects in jet substructure with CMS using a novel technique to cluster the b-hadron decays / Kalipoliti, Lida (Ecole Polytechnique) /CMS Collaboration
The study of jet substructure has given rise to a new era of precision quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) measurements related to the evolution of the parton shower. In order to better understand the role of the quark mass, the decay kinematics of the heavy flavor hadrons need to be isolated from the QCD branchings. [...]

Kalman filter for muon reconstruction in the CMS Phase-2 endcap calorimeter / Matthewman, Mark (Purdue U.) ; Rovere, Marco (CERN) ; Waltenberger, Wolfgang (Vienna, OAW) ; Brondolin, Erica (CERN) /CMS Collaboration
The High Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC) will offer a greatly increased number of events for more precise standard model measurements and BSM searches. To cope with the harsh environment created by numerous simultaneous proton-proton collisions, the CMS Collaboration has begun construction of a new endcap calorimeter, the High-Granularity Calorimeters (HGCAL). The anticipated surge in data volumes generated by the LHC in the coming years, especially during the High-Luminosity LHC phase, will reshape how physicists conduct their analysis. This necessitates a shift in programming paradigms and techniques for the final stages of analysis. [...]
