The experience gained at CERN by the R&D; for LINAC4 has been exported to medical and societal applications. With an innovative design of the Radio Frequecy Quadrupole (RFQ) at high frequencies, it is possible to build very com- pact structures, reproducible in industry and with the po- tential of full portability. Neutron production using compact linear electron accelerators / Olivares Herrador, Javier ; Wroe, Laurence ; Latina, Andrea ; Wuensch, Walter ; Corsini, Roberto ; Stapnes, Steinar ; Fuster-Martinez, Nuria ; Gimeno-Martinez, Benito ; Esperante, Daniel
Many reactor-based neutron sources are planned to shut down in the near future, and this is despite the increasing demand for neutron beamlines for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. Consequently, compact accelerator-based neutron sources arise as a competitive alternative that could meet the need for medium-flux fission or spallation sources. [...]

Crystal collimation of heavy-ion beams / Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Mazzolari, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (IES, Montpellier) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Pisa) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for lead–ion beams that will already reach their high-luminosity target intensity upgrade in the LHC Run 3 (2022-2025). While certain effects like e-cloud, beam-beam, impedance, inject and dump protection are relaxed with ion beams, halo collimation becomes a challenge, as the conventional multi-stage collimation system is about two orders of magnitude less efficient than for proton beams. Medical activities in CLEAR: studies towards radiotherapy using Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE) in the FLASH regime / Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (Naples U. ; INFN, Naples) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN) ; Robertson, Cameron (Oxford U.) ; Bateman, Joseph (Oxford U.) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U.) ; Rieker, Vilde (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN)
Given the present availability of high-gradient accelerator technology for compact and cost-effective electron linacs in the 100-200 MeV energy range, the interest for Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) radiotherapy (RT) for cancer treatment recently reached an all-time high. Particular significance is assumed by the Ultra-High Dose Rate (UHDR) regime where the so-called FLASH biological effect takes place, in which cancer cells are damaged while healthy tissue is largely spared. Studies of single and multi-bunch instabilities in linacs using RF-Track / Latina, Andrea (CERN)
In high-intensity linacs, bunch-to-bunch effects due to the excitation of short and long-range wakefields can lead to beam instabilities and beam breakup. Wakefields can be due to resistive or geometric effects excited in the RF structures or in the beam pipe. [...]

Operational experience and reliability of the new CERN Linac4 / Sargsyan, Edgar (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Skowronski, Piotr (CERN) ; Wegner, Rolf (CERN)
Since its completion in 2017, Linac4, the new 160 MeV proton injector for the CERN accelerator complex, has undergone some tests to assess and improve reliability, until being connected to the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) during the 2018-2020 Long Shutdown 2 (LS2). The performance requirements for the LHC high-luminosity upgrade have been successfully met, and during its first three complete years of operation the linac has shown high reliability figures. [...]

Accelerating structures for the FCC-ee pre-injector complex: RF design, optimization, and performance analysis / Kurtulus, Adnan (CERN) ; Grudiev, Alexej (CERN) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Raguin, Jean-Yves (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Craievich, Paolo (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bettoni, Simona (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
The Future Circular Collider electron-positron (FCC-ee) pre-injector complex demands high-performance RF accelerating structures to achieve reliable and efficient acceleration of beams up to 20 GeV. In this study, we describe an analytical approach to RF design for the traveling-wave (TW) structures including a pulse compression system to meet the rigorous specifications of the FCC-ee pre-injector complex. With a circumference of approximately 91 km, the Future Circular electron-positron Collider, FCC-ee, aims for unprecedented luminosities at beam energies from 45.6 to 182.5 GeV. A major challenge is reaching its design performance in the presence of magnet misalignments and field errors. [...]

Simulations of incoherent effects driven by electron clouds forming in the inner triplets of the Large Hadron Collider / Paraschou, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Mether, Lotta (CERN)
During Run 2 and Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), slow losses from electron cloud (e-cloud) effects have been systematically observed during the full duration of fills with closely-spaced proton bunches. In particular, these effects had been found to depend strongly on the crossing angle of the two beams and the value of the betatron functions in the interaction points. [...]
