Impact of high-intensity LHC beam operation on warm vacuum modules
/ Antuono, C (CERN) ; Krkotić, P (CERN) ; de la Fuente Garcia, E (CERN) ; Zannini, C (CERN) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, G (CERN) ; Chiggiato, P (CERN) ; Galloro, A (CERN) ; Giacomel, L (CERN) et al.
During the third run of the Large Hadron Collider in 2023, which had the highest intensity bunch population compared to previous runs, a beam dump incident with operational delays occurred due to increased losses attributed to pressure spikes within a warm vacuum sector. Subsequent inspections revealed localized annealing and plasticization of the tension spring in the sliding contact radio frequency finger of a 212 mm diameter vacuum module, alongside traces of vapor deposition on the various module components with the stainless steel spring material. Crystal collimation of heavy-ion beams
/ Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Mazzolari, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (IES, Montpellier) ; Dewhurst, Kay (CERN) ; Bandiera, Laura (INFN, Pisa) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for lead–ion beams that will already reach their high-luminosity target intensity upgrade in the LHC Run 3 (2022-2025). While certain effects like e-cloud, beam-beam, impedance, inject and dump protection are relaxed with ion beams, halo collimation becomes a challenge, as the conventional multi-stage collimation system is about two orders of magnitude less efficient than for proton beams.
